Statistics show you're most at risk of having an accident in the two years or so after you pass your test - one in five newly qualified drivers have a crash within a year. Your licence will be taken away if you increase that risk by committing offences like speeding.

The penalty point system is intended to deter drivers and motorcyclists from following unsafe motoring practices. Certain non-motoring offences, e.g. failure to rectify vehicle defects, can also attract penalty points. The accumulation of penalty points acts as a warning to drivers and motorcyclists that they risk disqualification if further offences are committed.
If you have six or more points on your licence during the first two years, you will lose your licence and will have to go through all the driving tests again as a learner. This means that you will have to reapply for a provisional licence and take both the theory and the practical test again.
